The anniversary of the monarch was a holiday in Canada long before Confederation, the first legislation, as the event is concerned, approved in 1845 by the Parliament of the Province of Canada officially recognized May 24 as the birthday of the queen Victoria. It was also noted that on this date in 1854, on the 35th anniversary of Queen Victoria, about 5,000 residents of Western Canada gathered in front of the Government House (near the present King and Simcoe streets in Toronto) to acclaim their queen .
